Event Details
The United Nations Association of Greater Boston’s Summer Institute in Global Leadership is a week-long Model UN program for students from all over to work together and address global issues. Please note that unlike our other programs, this week is designed for experienced MUNers. All students should have prior Model UN experience or have participated in a previous Summer Institute program. We recommend this program for students in grades 9–12.

- Explore the dynamic and exciting crisis style of debate, which demands on-your-feet thinking to solve problems rapidly
- Participate in public speaking and negotiation activities
- Learn from expert guest speakers
- Make friends and work together collaboratively on complex global issues
- Step into the role of a diplomat during Model UN simulations

Who participates?
This program is open to students entering grades 9–12. Students should have either participated in a previous week of UNAGB’s Summer Institute in Global Leadership or have independent Model UN experience.
What is Model UN?
In Model UN, participants learn about a global issue and are assigned to represent a specific country. In a simulation that mirrors a UN committee session, students (or delegates, as we refer to them!) give speeches, engage in formal debate, collaborate and negotiate ideas, draft solutions (referred to in Model UN as “resolutions”), and vote. Using parliamentary procedure to structure debate (just like the real UN!), students have the opportunity to build skills for life and leadership while learning about a complex global issue. This session will also explore the world of Model UN crisis simulations, an increasingly popular format that asks students to quickly solve increasingly complex challenges that change in response to the delegates’ actions.
Recognition/Certification
All students who complete a full UNAGB Summer Institute in Global Leadership program will receive a UNAGB Certification in Global Diplomacy, recognizing advanced skills in negotiation, public speaking and global awareness.
Transportation
Students/Families are responsible for their own transportation to/from this program. The Summer Institute in Global Leadership: Advanced Institute – Crisis Simulations will be accessible via public transportation in Boston.
